Pysanky

Definition

Noun (pl)

1. Ukrainian decorated Easter eggs, created by first making a design on the egg using wax, dying the egg, then removing the excess wax.

Traditionally, elaborate pysanky designs were drawn by hand but today templates are often used.

Word Origin

From Ukrainian  pysaty(to write)

The tradition of egg decoration in Slavic cultures originated in pagan times but was later absorbed into Christianity as the Easter egg, a symbol of resurrection.

In Ukraine, there is a traditional belief that pysanka can protect people from evil spirits and chaos. One myth is that older people should be given pysanky with darker colors and rich designs, as their lives have been fulfilled.

When properly made and stored, pysanky can last indefinitely. The oldest bits of chicken egg pysanky found date back to the 17th century.
