Latin verb tintinnare (to ring, clang, or jingle) + instrumental suffix -bulum
The earliest known use is its use in the writing of Edgar Allen Poe, particularly in his poem Bells (published 1849), but related adjectives tintinnabulary and tintinnabular were in use in the 1700s
