The release party for Leoma Retan’s new fantasy, Away with the Fairies, was a great success. All attendees enjoyed the substantial food and drink and Leoma Retan sold every copy of the book she had on hand. Many people purchased extra copies to give away.
In Away with the Fairies, which is written for ages 8 and up, 11-year-old Bommer and his two best friends are thrust into an unexpected adventure when they see Bommer’s younger cousin disappear before their eyes, hand-in-hand with a human-sized fairy girl. They enter the Fairy Lakes to rescue her but Bommer’s assumptions about fairies—and lots of other things—could spell catastrophe for them all.
Away with the Fairies is a funny, fast-moving fantasy adventure rooted in Celtic mythology and 1970s working-class Ireland, where friends matter but family is everything and the hardest part of a rescue may be admitting your assumptions could make you fail them both.
With themes of friendship, family, feeling invisible, and finding the place you truly belong, this is a book both adults and children will love.
Future books in the Fairy Roads series will continue Bommer’s adventures as he discovers that, in addition to fairies and leprechauns, ancient heroes and villains straight out of Celtic legend walk the Fairy Roads between worlds. But the truth doesn’t always match the legends. And sometimes even mythical beings need help only a human can provide. The sequel to Away with the Fairies will be available in 2027.
