Sand Castles and Second Chances, the first book in Lianne James “A Love on Turtle Island” series, would be a great beach read but I found it a terrific escape from the winter cold.

I found 49-year-old Lucinda Flowers, whose marriage has imploded, to be both relatable and engaging as she moves from burying her loss of self in fast foods, to trying to rescue her family’s failing business, to accepting that a second chance at love and romance might be a real possibility.

At the start, Lucinda decides she’s done with romance. Her mother, a widow with the energy of someone twenty years younger, and her sister are determined to change her look and her attitude. As to her brother, he feels trapped in the business and eager to move on. And the guy Mom is determined to set her up with—he’s the one she deserted after high school.

Told in a light and humorous style, I recommend this book, without reservation, to those who enjoy romance. As her sister tells Lucinda, when she tries to choose beige nail polish at the salon:

“There are two types of women. The first type dress for other women. You know, to get the oooh’s and aww’s and Oh, youre so classy, girlie! Those ones wear boring old beige polish. The second type, my dear. Well, the second type wear red on their toes and make sure their undies don’t have holes in them…just in case.”

Well said. And for me, well read.
