1. In a left-handed or wrong direction.

2. Contrary to the course of the sun or a clock.

3. (historic) In the wrong way.

 

The original recipe highlighted that the potion must be stirred widdershins.

 

Word Origin

In the earliest known text (early 1500s) this word was used to mean the wrong or opposite direction. Today it is generally used to mean in the opposite direction from a clock.

     widar (back, against)

     + sinnen (to travel)

=> Middle High German widersinnes

=> Scottish English widdershins
